Why 166/165? Secret rares
You have a card whose number is higher than the set total: 166/165, 239/193, 088/076. It is not a printing error, and it is not a fake. It is a secret rare: a card added beyond the official numbering, deliberately scarcer. The catalogue holds 1782 of them, 1272 tracked here.
What it actually changes
Every Pokémon set announces a card count: 165, 193, 076. Cards numbered above that total are called secret rares: they are absent from the official set list and printed in markedly lower quantities.
Three things follow. First the price: for the same Pokémon, a secret regularly sells for several times the regular version. Then grading: these are the cards where the gap between a raw copy and a PSA 10 is widest, so the ones worth inspecting closely before shipping. Finally confusion: many sellers list them without stating the number, and two listings under the same name can be two cards whose prices have nothing in common. Always check the printed number before comparing two prices.
