Should you grade your sports card? PSA, BGS or SGC
Grading matters more on sports cards than on Pokémon. A $15 basketball rookie can be worth $250 in PSA 10: a sixteen-fold gap, and the grade is doing all of the work. That is also what makes a mistake expensive — sending a card that comes back a 9 means paying fees for nothing.

The full math
The question is never "what does a PSA 10 sell for" but "what is left for me". Take the $15 raw card that sells for $250 in PSA 10:
- Grading fee: $25 to $70 per card depending on service level and turnaround, plus insured shipping both ways.
- Resale commission: roughly 13% on eBay, off the final price.
- Grade risk: the line everyone forgets. If you have a 30% shot at the 10 and the 9 only fetches $60, your expected value is not $250 but a blend of the two, minus fees either way.

The four things a grader looks at
- Centering. The most decisive point on modern sports cards, and the easiest to judge yourself: compare border widths, front then back. Past 60/40 on the front, a 10 becomes unlikely.
- Corners. Under a lamp, rotating the card. A lifted fibre invisible head-on shows up at an angle.
- Edges. On chrome stock — Prizm, Topps Chrome — tiny white chips along the black edge are the most common flaw.
- Surface. Scratches, fingerprints, print defects, and on refractors the notorious production lines.
The simple rule
Only grade when the raw → PSA 10 gap is more than four times the total cost of the operation, and the card has a real shot at the 10. Below that you are paying for a plastic case. The cards where the gap runs past ten times are few, and they are listed here — that is where grading turns a collection into a portfolio.
